Designer Bio: Prabal Gurung

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Designer Bio: Prabal Gurung.

As one of this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists, Prabal Gurung has a fresh, modern, and superbly unique vision as a fashion designer. Gurung showed a sexy yet alluringly subtle collection at Spring 2011 New York Fashion Week, impressing the fashion industry as a new designer to watch. It wasn’t until Fall 2010 that he first showed his designs at Bryant Park. Gurung derives his inspirations from all around the world, and then he transforms his stimuli into three-dimensional wearable works of art.

Gurung was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. He first became interested in fashion in New Delhi, India, where he studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. From there, Gurung traveled to places like Melbourne and London, where he worked with stylists and designers on fashion shows and international publications. After years of traveling, Gurung moved to New York City in 1999, where he became an intern at Donna Karan and a student at Parsons School of Design. After his Parsons education, Gurung worked for two years at Cynthia Rowley on the design team. These experiences brought him to Bill Blass, where he worked as Design Director for five years. This is when Gurung decided to go on his own and launch his line, the self-titled, PRABAL GURUNG.

Since launching his own line, Gurung has dressed many celebrated women of today, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Demi Moore, and Zoe Saldana, just to list a few. He was the recipient of the 2010 Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award, as well as a nominee for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Swarovski Womenswear Award, and continued to become a finalist. His vision for womenswear seems to be what the world of fashion desperately needs, and the industry’s leading style icons covet his pieces. His collections are sold all over the world, as well as online.

“We’ve had a decade of tight skirts and vulgar dresses, and I wanted to make a statement about something different,” said Gurung. The industry is waiting with high hopes to see what Gurung’s point of view will bring to the world of fashion in the future.
