Christie’s Sells Cullinan Dream, Sets New Record
Back in May, the auction house Christie’s announced the sale of the fancy intense blue diamond called the Cullinan Dream. At 24.18 carats, the diamond was regarded as a rare find. Now, the diamond holds the title as the most expensive fancy intense blue diamond to be sold.
Fetching more than $25 million, the diamond was auctioned at Christie’s on Thursday in New York. Classified as a Type llb diamond, the Cullinan Dream comes from the 122.52-carat rough blue diamond found in the Cullinan Mines of South Africa. The largest of four diamonds to be found, the diamond falls into a rare category that accounts for less than one-half of the 1% of all diamonds found.
Its unique color is the result of small amounts of boron being trapped in the crystal carbon structure during the formation of the diamond. The Cullinan Dream is now set as a cut-cornered rectangular mixed-cut fancy intense blue diamond and is flanked on either side by a tapered baguette-cut diamond. Other well-known diamonds that have been mined from the Cullinan mine include the 3,106-carat rough diamond that is known as the Cullinan Diamond. This rough diamond was then cut into two magnificent gems that now sit on the Imperial State Crown and Sceptre of the British Crown Jewels.

Picasso sets $179 million auction record in New York
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Picasso sets $179 million auction record in New York.
A Picasso masterpiece and a Giacometti statue smashed world records Monday for the most expensive art sold at auction, fetching more than $179 million and $141 million respectively in New York.
Pablo Picasso oil painting, “The Women of Algiers (Version 0),” sold for $179,365,000 after 11 minutes of furious bidding from four to five prospective buyers at Christie’s, where two auction rooms were packed.
It was the highest price for any work of art sold at auction, Christie’s said, but fell short of the $300 million reportedly paid privately by Qatar for Paul Gauguin’s painting “When Will You Marry?” in February.
Other world auction records were set for works by artists Cady Noland, Jean Dubuffet, Diane Arbus, Chaim Soutine and Peter Doig, Christie’s said.
The auction house listed the buyers as anonymous but said clients from Asia, the Gulf, Russia, Europe and the United States had competed for the top 10 lots of the sale.
Exponential growth in the art market, particularly for modern and contemporary works, is attributed to a growing number of private investors around the world and burgeoning interest in Asia and the Gulf.
The previous world record for an artwork sold at auction was $142.4 million, set for British painter Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies of Lucian Freud,” which was sold by Christie’s in New York in 2013.
Giacometti had also held the previous record for the most expensive sculpture sold at auction, formerly occupied by his “Walking Man I” that fetched $104.3 million in London in 2010.

Million-dollar Batmobile replica for sale
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Million-dollar Batmobile replica for sale.
A street-legal replica of the Batmobile, used in the Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale, has gone on sale for $1 million.
Based on the already iconic ‘Tumbler’ Batmobile from Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” and the Dark Knight films, the car has been custom-built from the ground up as an almost perfect replica — externally anyway.
Under the sculpted body panels you’ll find a General Motors LS series V8 engine, but you won’t find a Bat Pod motorbike escape vehicle or self-destruct system.
Instead, it’s been fitted with a decent stereo system, a DVD player, an iPod integration port and a global satnav system, all of which will probably be more useful in day-to-day situations of a non-crime-fighting nature.
Best of all in this regard are the cameras mounted around the car’s body to make it easier to maneuver along narrow streets and of course, to park.
The car sits on 44-inch wheels, complete with custom-built rims and, as it was built in the US, is available in left-hand-drive only. The company has built just five examples and each one has a $1 million price tag.

Luanda beats Tokyo as costliest expat city
The Angolan capital Luanda has regained the top spot in an annual survey of the most expensive cities for expatriates, followed by Moscow and Tokyo. The survey by the Mercer consulting group is published annually to help companies assess compensation allowances for expatriate workers.
“Despite being one of Africa’s major oil producers, Angola is a relatively poor country yet expensive for expatriates since imported goods can be costly,” said Barb Marder, a senior partner at Mercer.
“In addition, finding secure living accommodations that meet the standards of expatriates can be challenging and quite costly.”
Moscow’s high costs for rentals and imported goods accounted for its second-place finish, with a luxury unfurnished two-bedroom apartment in Moscow costing $4,600 a month and a cup of coffee $8.29.
Tokyo was the third most-expensive city in the survey, followed by Chad’s capital N’Djamena, Singapore, Hong Kong, Geneva, Zurich, Bern and Sydney.

Chinese Buyer Pays $328000 for a Pigeon
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Chinese Buyer Pays $328000 for a Pigeon.
A Chinese shipping magnate has paid a world record-high $328,000 for a Dutch pigeon, according to PIPA, an international pigeon auction house.
The buyer of the most-expensive pigeon on record, PIPA said, is Hu Zhen Yu, who runs a shipbuilding company in China.
He bought the bird for breeding rather than racing in China, where pigeon fancying is a fast growing sport and big business.
The bird was auctioned off in a group of 245 pigeons on the Belgian website Pigeon Paradise. The auction total take of $2.5 million was also a record.
Pigeon racing has a long and storied history in Western Europe. The sport dates back to the Romans and Charlemagne, who made pigeon-raising the exclusive privilege of nobles.
In today’s races, pigeons are launched hundreds of miles from their home, or “loft.” The first birds back win the race.
The sport has taken off in Asia, and especially China, which loves any kind of race that creates a betting opportunity.

Gold Silk Cape Spun By Spiders
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Gold Silk Cape Spun By Spiders.
An astonishing golden outfit made from the silk of spiders has gone on display at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.
It took more than four years to make the four-metre-long hand-woven textile from the silk of 1.2million female golden orb spiders, native to Madagascar.
It was made by Englishman Simon Peers and American Nicholas Godley, both of whom have lived and worked in Madagascar for many years.
Spiders were collected every morning before silk is extracted from them by trained handlers. They were returned to the wild at the end of each day.
The process is extremely laborious – on average, 23,000 spiders are needed to create about 28 grams of silk, according to the museum.
The last known spider silk textile was made for an exhibition in Paris in 1900 but no examples remain.

The world’s most expensive model car
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The world’s most expensive model car.
Hailed the world’s most expensive and precious car model by Guinness World Records, this creation is based on the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4.
The car was crafted by Robert Gülpen — who has also created miniatures of the Mercedes Benz 500 SL and Aston Martin DB5 from precious metals and gems.
The Lamborghini is made from carbon fibre like the original and its shell was milled using computer modelling data handed over from the Italian car manufacturer.
But, adds Gülpen, he wrapped a 1/1000mm thin thread of solid gold around the carbon fibres — a feature the original doesn’t boast.
The tyre rims have been cast from solid gold and platinum as has the entire interior, while diamonds have been inserted into the seat, headlights and steering wheel.
Sotheby’s will auction the car in December in either New York or Dubai with bids starting at $4.7 million,.

Domino's plans pizza on the Moon
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Domino's plans pizza on the Moon.
Domino's pizza has announced plans to conquer the final frontier by opening the first pizza restaurant on the Moon.
Domino's Japanese arm has proposed a branch on Earth's nearest galactic neighbour is the latest escalation in a pizza publicity war.
Rival chain Pizza Hut set the bar high in 2001 by delivering a pizza to astronauts orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station, but Domino's fought back last year in a series of events to mark the 25th anniversary of its arrival in Japan.
In December, the company paid one person Y2.5 million (£20,046) to work for one hour delivering pizzas.
The competition has been taken beyond the stratosphere now, however, with construction firm Maeda Corp coming up with a plan for a dome-shaped concrete Domino's restaurant on the surface of the moon.
The company estimates the entire project will cost Y1.67 trillion - some £13.4 billion - of which Y560 billion (£4.5 billion) will be required to transport 70 tons of construction materials and pizza-making equipment to the moon aboard 15 rockets.
Keen to make the most of local resources, Domino's said it will keep costs down by using mineral deposits on the moon to make the concrete, which is likely to cost around Y194 billion (£1.5 billion).
An artist's impression of the restaurant anticipates a two-storey dome with a diameter of around 26 metres and a basement level constructed of steel plating and an area to prepare pizzas. Staff would be required to live on the premises.
"We started thinking about this project last year, although we have not yet determined when the restaurant might open," Tomohide Matsunaga, a spokesman for Domino's, told The Daily Telegraph. The company also expects to be able to offer delivery services.
"In the future, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon, astronauts who are working there and, in the future, citizens of the moon," he said.

A Planet Made of Diamond
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents A Planet Made of Diamond.
Astronomers think they have recently found a star that was transformed and condensed into a planet made of solid diamond.
The team was able to detect the “diamond planet” with the 64m radio telescope in Parkes, Australia, and found out that it orbits an unusual star known as a pulsar.
The scientists’ measurements indicate that the planet has slightly more mass than Jupiter, but is 20 times as dense.
With the planet likely to be made largely of oxygen and carbon, its high density means it is almost certainly crystalline, meaning that a large part of the planet may be similar to a diamond.
The pulsar and its planet are part of the Milky Way’s plane of stars and lie 4,000 light-years away in the constellation of Serpens (the Snake).

World’s most expensive city? Try Luanda
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents World’s most expensive city? Try Luanda.
Angola’s capital Luanda retained the unenviable title of the world’s most expensive city for expatriates, narrowly edging out Tokyo, according to a new survey.
The Mercer group‘s study named the Pakistani port Karachi as the least expensive city, with living around three times cheaper than in Luanda.
Oil-rich Angola is a magnet for foreign workers who push up already high prices inflated by a reliance on imports.
The southern African nation’s domestic production lags behind its neighbours due to the effects of a 27-year-long civil war on its infrastructure.
Another African city, the Chadian capital N’Djamena, was placed third with Moscow fourth and Geneva fifth.
Paris dropped 10 places to 27th while London dropped one place to 18th. New York at 32nd was named as the most expensive metropolis in the United States.
Mercer senior researcher Nathalie Constantin-Metraln said: “In most Western European cities the cost of living for expatriates has remained relatively stable over the last 12 months.
“However, many of the region’s cities have still dropped in the ranking. In large, this is because all cities are compared to New York and price increases there have been more significant than in most European cities,” she added.
Australian cities jumped sharply in the ranking, reflecting the local currency’s 14 percent gain against the US dollar.
The report, which is published annually to help companies assess compensation allowances for expatriate workers, compared the cost of over 200 items including housing, food and transport in 214 cities, using New York as a reference.
