Video: 23 Michelin stars in 60 seconds

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Video: 23 Michelin stars in 60 seconds.

If you’ve never had the chance to dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant, a new 60-second video takes viewers on a culinary journey across a constellation of restaurants that collectively boasts 23 stars.

It’s food porn at its best, providing rapid-fire shots of kitchens at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, The Fat Duck, Hibiscus, Mugaritz, and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.

Set to the soundtrack of “Food, Glorious Food,” from the musical “Oliver!,” the video goes behind the scenes into the making of edible art worthy of a Michelin star.

Seafood stocks simmer, eggplants are blistered over an open fire, and artichoke hearts sizzle in a pan of fat in a dizzying montage of food porn.

The video was produced by Orama.tv for The Staff Canteen, a YouTube channel created for professional chefs and food lovers.

How to dine at Michelin-starred Mugaritz for free

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents How to dine at Michelin-starred Mugaritz for free.

Michelin-starred Spanish restaurant Mugaritz, which is currently ranked the fourth best restaurant in the world, will be hosting a free meal for six lucky applicants next month to open its “2014 season.”

Much like a theater production, the restaurant will be putting on a dress rehearsal lunch April 8, the day before their official opening, for six winners and their guests chosen from an online draw.

The applicants will be among the first to sample the San Sebastian restaurant’s new menu, developed behind closed doors for four months.

As a disciple of Spanish chef and culinary visionary Ferran Adrià, Mugaritz chef Andoni Luis Aduriz also espouses principles of molecular gastronomy and kitchen alchemy to elevate food into an elaborate dining experience.

To develop his menu, Aduriz works with scientists, anthropologists, musicians and artists. One of his most elaborate ‘dining seasons’ involved the making of a gastronomic opera, in which he commissioned a Basque artist to compose an original soundtrack inspired by the restaurant’s menu.

Mugaritz is ranked the fourth best restaurant on the planet in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards.

Registration for seats is now open and closes March 31. Winners will be contacted April 1 at 9 am. While the meal and drinks are free, guests must cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.

Gordon Ramsay plans to return to Dubai

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents: Gordon Ramsay plans to return to Dubai.

British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has hinted of plans to return to Dubai with a new restaurant after pulling out of the city-state more than a year ago.

In an interview with GulfNews.com, Ramsay said he’s looking at two potential locations for his latest Middle Eastern outpost, but otherwise remained tightlipped.

Ramsay has a long history with the United Arab Emirates, having steered the restaurant Verre at the Hilton Dubai Creek hotel for nine years until 2011.

His latest project would join existing locations such as The Gordon Ramsay Doha and Opal by Gordon Ramsay, both at the St. Regis Hotel in Doha, Qatar.

Ramsay is just one in a string of Michelin-starred, celebrity chefs who are expanding their empires into the Middle East, including French culinary titans Alain Ducasse and Guy Savoy.

Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art’s also tapped Ducasse to open the site’s first fine dining restaurant IDAM last year. The menu offers French Mediterranean cuisine with an “Arabic” twist.

Arzak to open a restaurant in London’s Halkin Hotel

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Arzak to open a restaurant in London’s Halkin Hotel.

Halkin Hotel in London has tapped triple-Michelin-starred father-daughter team Juan Mari and Elena Arzak of Spain to help relaunch the establishment’s restaurant.

Halkin Hotel will be replacing its existing Thai restaurant, Nahm, with a Spanish dining room to be christened Ametsa with Arzak Instruction, helmed by the Arzaks.

The London restaurant, slated to open in February 2013, will be the first UK outpost for the Arzaks, whose eponymously named restaurant is currently listed as the eighth best restaurant in the world, according to Restaurant magazine.

The elder Arzak, Juan Mari, was likewise given the Lifetime Achievement Award 2011 while Elena was named Best Female Chef this year by the same publication.

Like their San Sebastian restaurant, the London eatery will be based on Basque cuisine with a vanguard twist (Ametsa means ‘dream’ in Basque).

Caviar vending machines debut in LA

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Caviar vending machines debut in LA.

A caviar vending machine has opened in California for the deep-pocketed who prefer to indulge their snack cravings with caviar and blinis rather than candy bars.

Beverly Hills Caviar has set up the luxury snack food vending machine at the Burbank Town Center Mall, which also dispenses all the accoutrements one needs for a gold-gilded, midnight snack.

Think caviar, truffles, escargot, blinis, bottarga (fish egg sacks), oils, Mother of Pearl plates and spoons, gift boxes and gourmet salts.

It’s been a big week for caviar. Celebrity chef Eric Ripert of what’s been described as the best seafood restaurant in New York Le Bernardin, also launched his own line of luxury caviar. An 8-oz tin of Eric Ripert Imperial Select Caviar is yours for $1,050.

Chefs reveal eating secrets of world leaders

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Chefs reveal eating secrets of world leaders.

Barack Obama can’t stand beetroot, artichokes are off the menu at France’s presidential palace and Vladimir Putin does not take any chances with dishes that emerge from the Kremlin kitchens.

Those were just a few of the culinary titbits to emerge from the latest reunion of the select club of chefs who ply their trade on behalf of some of the most powerful men and women on the planet.

The “club des chefs des chefs”, which now counts some 20 members, was formed 35 years ago by Gilles Bragard, who revealed that Putin continues the tradition of medieval monarchs who, for fear of poisoning, were reluctant to eat anything that had not been tried first by someone else.

“Tasters still exist but only in the Kremlin, where a doctor checks every dish with the chef,” Bragard told reporters this week ahead of a reception for the chefs hosted by new French President Francois Hollande.

Bragard’s comments were confirmed by Putin’s head chef, Vakhtang Abushidi, and it seems he is not the only modern day leader who harbours a fear of what they may find on the plates put in front of them.

Anton Mosimann, a regular cook for the British royal family, recalled that a visit by a former US president resulted in him being “constantly followed around by two FBI guys who wanted to taste absolutely everything I was proposing to cook.”

More recent interference in the palace kitchen has come from Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge, the wife of Prince William, who asked the Swiss chef to lighten one of his sauces.

Mosimann also revealed that, long after her retirement, former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher harboured warm memories of the quality of the beef that was served during her time in Downing Street.

Typically, the grocer’s daughter could also remember just how much it cost. “It was delicious, but, oh, it was expensive!” Mosimann recalled the Iron Lady exclaiming.

Bernard Vaussion, who has cooked for French Presidents and their guests for 40 years, confirmed that his new boss Hollande would gladly give artichokes a wide berth.

But he is delighted that cheese is back on the Elysee menu after being banished from the table during the term of Hollande’s chocaholic predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy.

Cristeta Comerford, the head chef at the White House, would not be drawn on US President Obama’s aversion to beetroot (also revealed by Bragard), perhaps anxious not to undermine Michelle Obama’s drive to get American kids to eat more fruit and vegetables.

By way of example, the first lady has established a vegetable plot and an orchard in the White House grounds.

Monaco’s Prince Albert II — a “fine gourmet” according to his chef Christian Garcia — is another fan of home-grown cuisine, with much of what he eats drawn from his organic kitchen garden.

Offal is the only no-go area for Garcia, who has recently added the South African speciality bobotie — a spiced minced meat dish baked with an egg-based topping — to his repertoire of recipes following Albert’s marriage to Princess Charlene.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Now Makes Honey

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Jaeger-LeCoultre Now Makes Honey.

True to its historic roots located in an exceptional place between lake and forests in the Vallée de Joux, Jaeger-LeCoultre remains particularly concerned by and involved in the integration of its Manufacture within its natural environment.

Since July, observant visitors can spot ten hives installed in front of the entrance of the Grand Watchmaking House, or Grande Maison as it is known in French.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has decided to offer an authentic, original souvenir – a unique product from the Vallée de Joux – to each of its visitors.

From now on, every visitor to the Manufacture will have the opportunity of tasting “Honey from the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre”.

The Grande Maison has decided to start its own production. Concerned about producing the best quality honey possible and with respecting biodiversity, Jaeger-LeCoultre called upon Franck Crozet, a professional bee keeper in the region, to install and take care of the ten hives set up in front of the Manufacture.

The aim of this initiative is to make the visitors, as well as the 1,200 employees, aware of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s commitment to preserving the environment.

Bees play a key role in nature – by transporting pollen from flowers that they visit, they contribute to the reproduction of plant species.

Today, they are a threatened species and this is a good opportunity for the Manufacture to give them a helping hand.

The Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata costs $1,000

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata costs $1,000.

A restaurant in New York is offering something special to customers with expensive tastes – a $1,000 omelette.

Diners at Norma’s in Le Parker Meridien hotel can now order the “Zillion Dollar Frittada”, a Spanish omelette with lobster and 10oz (280g) of caviar.

Restaurant manager Steven Pipes said it began as a lesser dish, but his chefs “decided to have some fun with it”. “We thought we should really make something that would be a spectacular feast for a celebration,” he said.

The restaurant has a bell which will be rung whenever a customer orders the 3,000-calorie dish, topped with sevruga caviar.

According, to BBC, a smaller version of the Zillion Dollar Frittada retails at just $100.

A London restaurant served up what was then thought to be The world’s most expensive omelette. And that was a relative bargain at a mere £90.

The pricey delight, available from London eaterie Bosidale, was made of gulls’ eggs and contained lobster, crab and truffles.

The World’s Best Sushi Chef – VIDEO

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The World’s Best Sushi Chef – VIDEO.

A documentary that goes behind the counter and into the life of a man who’s been called the greatest sushi chef in the world is set to open in New York Friday.

Tucked away in an underground Tokyo subway station is an unremarkable-looking 10-seat eatery called Sukiyabashi Jiro which serves Michelin-starred sushi by 85-year-old Jiro Ono, the first chef in Japan to earn three Michelin stars.

In trailers for the film Jiro Dreams of Sushi, filmmaker David Gelb captures the deft, economic movements of Ono’s hands as he shapes and molds the rice for his sushi and lacquers the fish with gentle brushstrokes.

Sushi and sashimi are presented on black marbles slabs and diners eat in a hushed silence that speaks of their reverence for the ceremonial experience and the master sushi chef.

The film is not just an ode to sushi and the octogenarian’s unrelenting pursuit of perfection, but also explores the father-son relationship and succession as the eldest son Yoshikazu is slated to take over the legendary restaurant.

Gordon Ramsay opening restaurant in Las Vegas

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presentsGordon Ramsay opening restaurant in Las Vegas.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay will be opening his first Las Vegas restaurant this year with a menu that’s supposed to bridge Parisian culture and Ramsay’s British roots with steakhouse fare and fish and chips.

Gordon Ramsay Steak will open this spring at the Paris Las Vegas casino and seat 274 diners in a modern steakhouse atmosphere styled after the City of Light.

Before becoming a Michelin-starred chef, Ramsay trained in Paris under the likes of Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon.

Menu selections will feature steakhouse fare, specializing in aged beef, but also reflect Ramsay’s British heritage with fish and chips and Shepherd’s Pie offerings.

The Las Vegas restaurant opening comes as Ramsay closes two others in Australia. Last year, Gordon Ramsay Holdings announced it’d be closing Maze and Maze Grill in Melbourne after concluding that the restaurants were not “sustainable.”

It also closed two Maze locations in Prague and Cape Town over the last few years, but locations in New York, London and Qatar continue to operate.

Tokyo tops out Paris again as world food capital

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Tokyo tops out Paris again as world food capital.

Tokyo has now more Michelin three star restaurants than Paris, according to the latest edition of the gastronomical guide.

Japan as a whole also beats France, with 32 establishments granted the maximum grade, against 25 in the guide’s home country. Paris has just 10 three star eateries.

Of Tokyo’s 160,000 restaurants, 16 were awarded top marks, 52 got two stars and 179 were deemed worthy of one star by the authors of the Red Guide.

While most of those included in the book serve Japanese food, a Korean restaurant was awarded two stars, while two French restaurants got top honours.

A guide to western Japan released last month propelled the country into the world top spot for haute cuisine, with 15 top rated restaurants in cities including Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and the former capital Nara.

“Japan is a unique country with many cities full of high level cuisine,” said Bernard Delmas, president of Michelin in Tokyo, last month.

“This is why, though we reach the fifth anniversary of the arrival of the Michelin guide in Japan, we continue to discover new stars to introduce to our readers.”

The Ledbury named the best restaurant in the UK

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The Ledbury named the best restaurant in the UK.

For the second year running, London restaurant The Ledbury has been named the top restaurant in the UK in the National Restaurant Awards 2011.

Helmed by Aussie chef Brett Graham, the two Michelin-starred eatery has been on a continuous winning streak in the past few months.

Monday night’s win follows in the heels of the 2012 London Restaurants Survey where 5,500 Zagat readers voted Graham’s food the best in London.

In August, the Notting Hill eatery also made headlines not for its food, but for its staff who leapt to the defense of their diners when hooligans from the London protests crashed through their front doors and terrorized guests.

Their latest badge of honor was handed out at a ceremony at The Connaught Rooms in London Monday night, reports industry publication BigHospitality.co.uk.

Meanwhile, Blumenthal’s eateries Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and The Fat Duck placed third and fourth respectively. At No. 2 is Pollen Street Social.

Awards are voted for by the National Restaurant Awards academy made up of chefs, restaurateurs, and food critics from across the UK.

Since its opening in 2005, Graham has catapulted The Ledbury into Michelin-starred status and quickly gained the attention of the culinary world and food critics internationally.

For £95 (about €109), a tasting menu at the restaurant consists of dishes like Crisp Chicken Confit with a “Risotto” of New Potatoes, Wild Mushrooms and Summer Truffle; Pork Jowl Roasted with Licorice and Short Rib of Ruby Red Beef with Celeriac Baked in Ash, Pickled Walnuts and Bone Marrow.

One Zagat reader was particularly smitten with the rabbit ravioli starter and cod with pumpkin polenta main, which is described as “beautifully executed.”

“Like staring at the sun, it’s blinding — simply awesome,” they wrote in April. “…Outstanding service and exquisite food — it doesn’t get any better than this, folks.”

The Ledbury was also the highest new entry in Restaurant Magazine’s S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants this year, debuting at No. 34.

Here are the top 10 restaurants in the UK, according to the National Restaurant Awards 2011:

1. The Ledbury, London
2. Pollen Street Social, London
3. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, London
4. The Fat Duck, Bray
5. The Sportsman, Seasalter
6. Hibiscus, London
7. The Square, London

Dining out? Restaurant Dos & Don’ts

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Dining out? Restaurant Dos & Don’ts.

Is it rude to tweet about a luscious treacle tart at dinner? Or take a phone call when your starter is being served?

It’s an issue that has London divided in a Zagat London Restaurants survey released Wednesday that asked respondents to weigh on the issue.

According to the 5,500 diners answering the survey, 53 percent said it’s “rude and inappropriate” to text, tweet or talk on the phone while dining at the table.

A trans-Atlantic comparison reveals that the Brits — who have a historic reputation as the exemplification of etiquette and manners — are more forgiving than their American counterparts.

In Los Angeles, for example, more than half of Zagat readers — 67 percent — said it was rude to text and dine, while 64 percent of New Yorkers shared the same opinion.

Meanwhile, preserving your Michelin meal or epic triple-decker sandwich on camera was considered acceptable by the majority of diners, with 74 percent of Londoners saying it was “ok.”

Louis Vuitton Now Makes Honey

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Louis Vuitton Now Makes Honey.

In April 2009, Louis Vuitton installed a trio of beehives on the roof of its Parisian headquarters. Since then the hives have welcomed as many as 200,000 bees.

Hives installed in the middle of a city can actually yield up to four times the amount of honey those in the country produce according to French beekeepers association.

Two years later, the buzzy guests have gathered 75kg of nectar and produced enough honey that Vuitton decided to bottle the fruits of its apiculture.

The product is called La Belle Jardinière and says in fine print at the bottom of the label, “Produit a Paris par Louis Vuitton” (Produced in Paris by Louis Vuitton).

La Belle Jardiniere will be distributed as a gift to friends of Vuitton.
