Tattoo-themed cruise to set sail next year

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Tattoo-themed cruise to set sail next year.

There’s likely to be much leering and staring. At times, a bit of disrobing and probably some touching. But that’s to be expected on the first tattoo-themed North American cruise that will set sail next year.

Tattoo lovers looking for both a novel, new vacation idea and a fresh tat may be interested in Ink or Swim, the latest thematic, hyper-niche cruise package to come out of the cruising industry.

For guests with no more skin real estate to spare for another tattoo, other activities will include beach parties, tattoo contests, bikini competitions, onboard whirlpools, FlowRider surf simulator, musicals, casino and Burlesque shows.

Rates for Ink or Swim, meanwhile, begin at $970 USD per person based on double occupancy. More info: www.inkorswimtattoocruise.com.

Today’s urban beach escape: Miami Beach

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Today’s urban beach escape: Miami Beach.

If you’re looking for a destination that can reconcile world class entertainment with beach life, check out the coastal resort city of Miami Beach, perhaps the picture postcard of American beach living.

The city likes to call itself ‘America’s Riviera,’ a cosmopolitan destination that glitters with some of the world’s hottest clubs, celebrities and beach bodies.

Palm trees fringe large boulevards, which are dotted with cafes, fancy restaurants, world-class shopping and luxurious hotels.

In addition to 11 km of white sand beaches, MIAMI Beach is also home to three golf courses, 20 parks, and is a hub for arts and culture.

Think Art Basel, the premiere international and contemporary art show, and the Art Deco Historic District in South Beach.

For people watching and partying, head to South Beach. If you want to take a stroll or go for a sun-soaked run, hit the Miami Beach Central boardwalk.

According to the local tourism board, 4 pm is the ideal time to hit Lummus Park beach, as crowds will have thinned and the sun will be more forgiving.

Recently renovated, South Pointe Park at the southern tip of the city offers spectacular views of behemoth cruise ships sailing out to sea and includes a children’s playground, restaurants and a pier for fishing.

Cruise Ships to be Banned from Venice?

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Cruise Ships to be Banned from Venice?

Key cultural figures have petitioned the Italian government for enormous cruise ships to be banned from the picturesque lagoon in Venice.

“We write to appeal for your active support … in safeguarding the city of Venice and its Lagoon,” the 21 signatories said in a letter published Thursday, addressed to Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Monti.

“Public opinion throughout the world regards the protection of Venice as a matter of extreme concern,” it said, stressing that decisions taken “often run contrary to the simplest criteria of prudent foresightedness and common sense.”

The petition, signed among others by Pierre Rosenberg — a former director of the Louvre museum — and American crime fiction author Donna Leon, warned the ships could cause serious damage to the environment and Venices heritage.

The letter slams “the increasing, invasive and uncontrolled presence of enormous cruise liners in the Lagoon, even in the immediate vicinity of the uniquely important buildings and sites around St. Marks Basilica.”

The signatories said they were “surprised and shocked” that a restriction imposed in March which banned ships of over 40,000 tons — only a little smaller than the Titanic — from entering St. Marks Basin had been suspended.

The ban on cruise ships sailing too close to the coast in Venice and in nature reserves was imposed after the shipwreck of the Costa Concordia luxury liner off Giglio island in January, notably to protect the environment.

Tiger Airways rolls out premium add-on services

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Tiger Airways rolls out premium add-on services.

Budget carrier Tiger Airways has introduced a new Tiger Plus premium add-on service, reported travel website TTGAsia.com Monday.

The premium service, part of the carrier’s initiative to expand its product and service offerings, will be available for flights departing from Singapore Changi Airport T2.

Tiger Airways, which operates from Singapore and Australia, flies to over 30 destinations across 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Passengers who are on the premium service will have access to SATS Premier Lounge at Changi Airport Terminal 2.

Amenities at the lounge include free flow of refreshments and beverages, shower facilities, massage chairs, workstations with high-speed internet access, wireless internet connectivity and cable television. Tiger Airways is the first low-cost carrier to provide access for passengers to the premium lounge.

Tiger Plus, which costs about $39, is available for Tiger Airways flights departing from Singapore and can be purchased online or at service desks in the terminal.

The passengers will also have access to a dedicated check-in counter providing an early check-in service from 4am to 11.59pm on the same day as their flight.

This new service adds to Tiger Airways’s existing premium offering, the BoardMeFirst priority boarding service, which costs about $5 per person per flight segment.

Airline add-on services are growing in numbers and complexity as carriers continually devise new services and products to sell.

American Airlines recently introduced a new baggage delivery service within four hours of arrival priced from US$29.95 to US$49.95, while US Airways now has a premium meal in economy on international flights for US$19.99.

Cathay Pacific unveils new business class upgrades

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Cathay Pacific unveils new business class upgrades.

Cathay Pacific unveiled its new regional business class upgrades on Monday which marked its 66th anniversary as Hong Kong’s home carrier.

The new features, developed over a period of two years, took into account the findings of a survey of members of Cathay Pacific’s frequent-flyer Marco Polo Club.

“Our new Regional Business Class seat was developed after listening to our customers’ feedback,” noted Cathay Pacific’s chief executive John Slosar.

The principal feature of the upgrades is the business class seat, which will be more spacious than the previous with its width increased from 20 to 21 inches.

With a seat pitch also up from 45 inches to 47 inches, every business class seat is encased in a shell to guard against an intrusion of privacy.

Other enhanced features include a seat recline of 36 inches instead of the previous 32 to 35 inches, the reclining of seats enabled electronically by buttons on the rim of the cocktail table, and a higher legrest of up to 60 inches instead of 38 to 55 inches previously.

The new headrest of the seat is also made more adjustable while meal tables have been enlarged to 14.5 inches deep from the previous 11 inches.

The aisle-side armrest of each seat can now also be lifted in order to facilitate passengers’ ease of movement during the flight.

In addition, each seat is equipped with a universal power supply outlet to keep electronic devices fully charged, a multi-port connector with USB port, as well as a connector for the iPhone, iPod or iPad.

The upgrades will also feature the new StudioCX widescreen on-demand entertainment system as each seat will be equipped with a new and enlarged 12.1 inch touchscreen monitor.

The new business class features will be fitted into all of Cathay Pacific’s 29 regional aircraft, including the Boeing 777s and A330-300s, beginning with routes to Haneda, Narita, Singapore, Osaka and Jakarta. The upgrades will be progressively installed in the carrier’s regional routes from January 2013 until the end of 2014.

Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific’s sister carrier, Dragonair, which flies to China and other Asian destinations, will also be fitted with the business class features, although no date for the rollout has been set.

The latest business class upgrades follow other recent enhancements to Cathay Pacific’s in-flight offerings as competition between airlines hots up. Earlier this year, Cathay Pacific introduced its new Premium Economy Class seats and long-haul Economy Class seats aimed at providing more comfort to passengers.

Legoland theme park in Malaysia will include 40 rides, shows and attractions as well as interactive features that will allow its visitors to build, pedal, steer and splash.

The 76 acre (30 hectare) theme park will cater to children from 2 to 12 with roller coasters, racing cars and dedicated to the family.

The main highlight of the park is Miniland, where Asian landmarks have been recreated using more than 30 million Lego bricks. The interactive world at a 1:20 scale includes people, trains and airplanes.

According to Siegfried Boerst, general manager of Legoland in Malaysia, the park includes 50 million Lego bricks and models.

Croatia registers record tourism figures

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Croatia registers record tourism figures.

Croatia‘s tourism sector, a driving force in the country’s ailing economy, registered record figures during the first eight months of the year, a minister said on Friday.

“Based on the results achieved so far and announcements (for the rest of the year) this is the best tourist season in Croatia’s history,” Tourism Minister Veljko Ostojic told reporters, based on figures of arrivals and overnight stays.

During the first eight months of the year, which include the July-August peak tourist season, Croatia hosted 9.82 million visitors, mostly on its stunning Adriatic coast. It was a 4.22 percent hike compared with the same period in 2011.

At the same time the country registered almost 59 million overnight stays, some five percent more than in January-August last year.

The minister repeated the country’s drive to increase tourism income by three to five percent this year. ”The goal is to achieve or surpass seven billion euros ($8.8 billion)” in income from tourism, he said.

But, Ostojic warned that new tourism investments were crucial for Croatia.

Most of the travellers flocking to Croatia’s Adriatic coast were Germans who made up some 20 percent of the overall figure. They were followed by Slovenians, Austrians, Italians and Czechs.

How to indulge on a holiday to Puglia

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents How to indulge on a holiday to Puglia.

Beautiful Puglia is one of Italy’s loveliest regions, located at the heel of the ‘boot’ - the Salento peninsula.

With long stretches of beautiful coastline, acres of olive groves, vineyards and superb food and wine, the area is an ideal holiday spot for those seeking a touch of luxury. Rather than simply booking a hotel, visitors can choose from a range of luxurious self-catering accommodation - from romantic beachfront villas and chic trulli to magnificent masserie, there is a wealth of indulgent, high-end options on offer.

Spending your holiday in your own private accommodation means you can relax in comfort and enjoy the freedom of privacy. But having your own ‘home away from home’ doesn’t mean you need to spend your time wandering the supermarket aisles, sweating in the kitchen or sitting behind the wheel of a car!

If you’re looking to treat yourself to lavish Italian holiday, in which you can relax and let others do the hard work for you, here are just a few examples of indulgent extras that can make a stay in a Puglia villa even more luxurious.

Dinners on request

A holiday is a time to truly step back from your usual day-to-day duties, so why not be waited on for once by hiring your very own ‘in villa’ cook? As you relax by the pool and soak up the sun, your cook will prepare authentic, mouth-watering Puglian dishes created from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Whatever your requirements, whether a romantic dinner for two or feeding the whole family, you can have your meals created for you and even save yourself the chore of washing up.

A glass of the finest

Puglia is prolific in its production of wine, creating around 17% of Italy’s wine. It is famous for its Negroamaro (the ‘bitter black’) and Primitivo (Zinfandel) grapes, which are highly regarded internationally. This beautiful region is home to countless wineries for tasting and purchasing wines. If you can’t bear to drag yourself away from the pool, now may be the ideal time to arrange a delivery straight to your villa, so that you can indulge in these magnificent wines without having to leave your chair. Some villas in the area, such as the lavish Masseria Curti Vecchi, come with their own fully stocked wine cellars too, so you can be sure to stay well supplied for the entirety of your trip.

Indulgent cruising

Nothing oozes luxury like a private yacht and, with 800km of stunning coastline to explore, Puglia is a perfect location for taking to the waves. Enjoy snorkelling and swimming in the clear blue sea from your very own vessel as you float far from the hustle and bustle of towns and cities. If you prefer a speedier option, you can also hire private speedboats, so your day on the waves can be as fast-paced or relaxing as you choose.

Chauffeur-driven delights

Puglia is home to some stunning national parks, vast stretches of beautiful beaches, adventure parks, zoos, charming villages, markets and so much more. The best way to explore this fascinating region is by car, but if you still want to relax and indulge in those delicious wines without worrying about tackling Italian roads, then you could consider hiring your own private chauffeur to transport you to your location without any hassle. With a personal driver to transport you around the region, you will be free to sit back and enjoy your surroundings without having to lift a finger except for arranging to be collected at the end of day.

If any of the options above take your fancy, Think Puglia provides a range of exclusive luxury villas in Puglia and offers a range of indulgent Think Experiences such as private chefs, boat charters, wine deliveries and personal chauffeurs. You could, for example, consider a stay in the exquisite Villa Blanca, a luxurious summer house with its own infinity pool and stunning sea views just outside the exclusive seaside resort of Leuca on Puglia’s southernmost tip. Or why not book a holiday at the beautifully restored, luxury Masseria Lamacoppa, situated just outside the uniquely evocative “white town” of Ostuni in Puglia’s Salento peninsula.

Visit www.thinkpuglia.com for more information and to view the wide range of luxury villas available throughout the region.

Luxe travel guides downsize for families

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Luxe travel guides downsize for families.

Top-end travel guide brand Luxe has announced the launch of a mini-guidebook series in a bid to broaden its appeal in the competitive market.

Little Luxe are designed as short travel guides for “families on the go,” focusing on major cities and the family-friendly experiences they offer.

The first guides will focus on Asia, Luxe said, with Little Luxe Hong Kong already available and Little Luxe Singapore to follow in November 2011.

The pocket-sized guides are brightly colored and include answers to common questions such as the best child-friendly hotels, restaurants suitable for families and high-end family stores selling maternity wear and must-have toys.

The guides retail for US$ 9.99 (£4.99/€6.99) and are available in stores and online.

Publishers are increasingly downsizing their guides in the hope of increasing both the relevance and affordability of their guides.

In 2006, Dorling Kindersley’s Eyewitness brand launched its first pocket map and guide series, rapidly followed by Lonely Planet, which announced the Encounter range, focusing on major cities suitable for a short break, in 2007.

Qantas in ‘world-first’ tablet trial

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Qantas in ‘world-first’ tablet trial.

Passengers on Qantas will be the first in the world to have in-flight entertainment streamed wirelessly to tablet devices in a trial announced by the airline Thursday.

To be rolled out from the end of next month on one Boeing 767-300 flying domestic routes, the six-week test will see Qantas’s current entertainment programme broadcast to a tablet supplied by the airline.

The brand of tablet is yet to be confirmed, but Qantas said Apple’s popular iPad was among the models being considered.

“Q Streaming” will be made available to passengers for viewing on their own tablet, laptop or smartphone later in the trial and would be a key part of the scheme if ultimately adopted, Qantas said.

“We are very pleased to be the first airline in the world to trial this wireless streaming product,” said Alison Webster, the airline’s customer experience manager.

It will be assessed for wider roll-out both domestically and internationally once the trial is complete, she added, with supplied tablets to be specially configured not to work outside the aircraft if stolen.

The plan could also see a “play-back” option to allow passengers who did not finish watching a programme on their own device before landing to complete their viewing, even after leaving the aircraft.

Replacing seat-back entertainment systems with tablets offered significant fuel efficiencies due to the weight saving, she added — an important consideration as fuel prices rocket and Australia debates a pollution tax.

“We are all focused on fuel burn being environmentally friendly and we have huge commitments to sustainability targets,” Webster said.

American Airlines has launched a similar programme with Samsung’s Galaxy tablet for first and business class domestic passengers, but content is pre-loaded rather than streamed direct.

Budget Qantas offshoot Jetstar already offers iPads for rent on some of its flights.

Inside Korean Air’s new Airbus A380

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Inside Korean Air’s new Airbus A380.

Korean Air is to inaugurate its new A380 “superjumbo” on a route between New York City and Seoul this week.

The airline, which is the seventh in the world to fly the enormous Airbus aircraft, will wave off the first A380 flight from New York across the Pacific Ocean on August 9, launching what it describes as a “new age of air travel.”

It will be the first A380 service between Asia and New York, carrying some 407 passengers — considerably less than the 525 that the A380 is capable of.

Korean Air says that this makes room for a more spacious cabin, with 301 passengers in economy class, 94 lie-flat sleeper seats spaced six feet apart on the upper business deck and 12 first-class suites.

The aircraft also holds three bars, all for premium passengers — the Celestial bar, a cocktail lounge at the rear of the business class upper deck, another self-service bar at the front of the business-class deck, and a bar reserved for the use of first-class passengers only.

Passengers on board can also visit the world’s first in-flight duty free outlet, a compact area selling cosmetics, perfumes, liquor and accessories that are magnetized to ensure they don’t fall off the shelves if the aircraft hits turbulence.

The route is to run between Seoul and New York every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday through August before switching to become a daily service from September.

Korean Air’s major rival, Asiana Airlines, announced in January that it intends to purchase six A380s for routes to Europe and the United States.

Abu Dhabi posts record tourist results

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Abu Dhabi posts record tourist results.

A fall in Abu Dhabi‘s hotel prices has prompted a record year for the Emirate so far, according to figures released July 27.

The first six months of 2011 showed the best hotel results in the history of the country, with the number of visitors climbing 11 percent to just over one million.

Authorities hope to break the two million visitor target for the first time this year.

The figures also suggested that people are staying 13 percent longer in the country than in 2010, with the average length of a stay just under three nights.

According to the tourist board, average room rates have fallen by 15 percent compared to the same period in 2010, making Abu Dhabi a more affordable destination than upscale competitors such as Paris, New York or Tokyo.

That trend could also continue, with a glut of new hotels expected to open in the emirate before the year is out — a total of ten luxury five-star properties will open their doors in the coming months.

Big names include Westin, Anantara, Hyatt, Park Hyatt, St Regis, Rocco Forte Hotel, Ritz-Carlton and Jumeirah at Etihad Towers.

Online travel agent Expedia has revealed that it is seeing an increased interest in cruises to Europe in response to cuts in air capacity between America and Europe.

The year so far has seen increased interest in European cruises from US consumers. There was “tremendous value” to be secured for travelers right now.

According to the firm, cruise lines are currently cutting rates for European tours, “without cutting services,” sometimes giving travelers a cheaper option than flying to the region and staying in a hotel.

Comparing the price of a seven-night cruise vs a seven-night trip including hotel, food and transportation in Spain and Italy, Expedia calculated that travelers paid 68 percent more for the self-guided trip vs an inside cabin (generally the cheapest option) and 33 percent more vs a balcony cabin.

While spending the bulk of a vacation on board a ship won’t appeal to everybody, Expedia points out that travelers don’t need to miss out on land excursions — although it doesn’t mention whether its cost comparison includes fees for such trips.

The European cruise ship market has grown by 165 percent since 1998, with reports suggesting that it is the fastest-growing sector in global tourism.

In Europe, some of this growth has been fueled by the popularity of river cruising, which uses smaller vessels to navigate restricted waterways that crisscross the continent .

Eearlier this year, the Cruise Line International Association said that it was a sector gaining rapidly in popularity, with shorter cruises being seen in Europe.
