Flouncey skirts and floral prints may be hard to think about in the dead of winter, but one spring trend we can get behind right now? The trench coat. The Burberry and Aquascutum classic trench coats may never go out of style, but designers, including Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey, are putting their own spin on the timeless silhouette (right). From leather, high-shine, or denim looks, to mixed texture, embroidered or widely belted ones, the options for Spring 2011 run the gamut, allowing us to easily express our personal style via this versatile outerwear style.
While east coasters may have to hold off on this trend for at least another month, west coasters are smack in the middle of the rainy season, and the trench (which was, after all, developed as a lightweight alternative to the heavy coats worn by British and French soldiers during World War I) is the perfect splurge-worthy item of the season.
To work more than one trend into this look, opt for a denim trench like one from Derek Lam, or a white or ivory one like those seen on the Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2011 runway.
